France... The King of Mustards ~. Mustard 101

So we've been to France many times over the last 40 years, and when we're not hosting groups, we often stay in hotels for our shorter stays... But when we go over on our research trips to Provence, we  typically stay in private cottages or AirBnbs so that we have a kitchen...  When we work out on the road actively researching all day, we often don't feel like going out at night to restaurants for dinner...  and theses trips can often be a couple weeks long and costly, so having a kitchen helps to lower our expenses...  So we spend a fair amount time in grocery stores stocking up these kitchens, and this is where we became big fans of French Mustards, or as they say Moutarde!  OMG! they are so good! We'll of course have a few different ones at the Villa, but it's also a great inexpensive souvenir to bring home for yourself or others... And they sometimes come in cute little jars that are made to double as a really nice little casual stemless wine or spirits glass!

So how is it that France became the King of Mustards?   Mustard seeds have been cultivated in China and the Indus Valley since 4000 BC and mustard–made from mixing mustard seeds and vinegar–has been around since Ancient Rome. The first recipe for mustard appears in a Roman cookbook from the fourth or fifth century called “De Re Coquinaria”, which translates to “On the Subject of Cooking”. In the recipe, the mustard is made with mustard seeds, pepper, honey, vinegar, and an assortment of herbs. Mustard first came to Paris in the 10th century, when the monks of Saint Germain des Pres began using imported mustard seeds to create their own concoction. By the 13th century, the city of Dijon, France had become a mustard huband it remains the mustard capital of the world, along with the French city of Meaux.  Mustard has been beloved by France since the 14th century, when the government first introduced regulations for mustard recipes. Throughout history, Popes and Kings have even appointed their own mustard-makers, but the condiment was enjoyed by royals and commoners alike. While France is most famous for Dijon-style mustard, you can also find whole-grain mustard and honey mustard along with other various flavors, styles, and variations that are unique to France.  Below, we’ve rounded up a few of the best French mustards, from familiar favorites to hard-to-find boutique brands.

Pommery

Sold in an iconic stoneware jar, Pommery’s Moutarde de Meaux has been made in the city of Meaux since the 1700s. Pommery’s original mustard is a grainy, stone-ground mustard that has a richer and deeper flavor than Dijon. In addition to their traditional recipe, Pommery also has variations made with ingredients like honey, cognac, fig, truffle, or green peppercorn. There is also a more finely ground version, called “fine” that’s a traditional Dijon.
Where to find it: While you can sometimes find Pommery at grocery stores, you can order it from specialty stores, or you can order it directly from www.moutarde-de-meaux.com

Bornier

Spicy and tangy, Bornier is a traditional Dijon mustard, made in France for over 200 years. There are three varieties: original, a smooth, creamy Dijon; whole grain, packed with crunchy mustard seeds; and honey mustard, made with 10% honey. The Dijon and whole grain varieties also have organic versions.
Where to find it: All Bornier varieties can be found on Amazon, and you’ll be able to find the organic versions at grocery stores like Whole Foods

Maille

Maille is one of our favorites!
Arguably the most famous French mustard brand, Maille has been around for centuries, selling vinegar and mustard in storefronts in Paris and Dijon. Today, you’ll likely be able to find Maille’s most common versions–Dijon and Whole Grain–in your local grocery store, but in France you’ll be able to find versions made with truffles, grilled onions, walnuts, pesto, black currants, and more.  Where to find it: Visit your local grocery store, order online from Amazon, or stop by a Maille boutique in Bordeaux, Paris, Dijon, Melbourne, or London.  (those of you going to Paris will enjoy a stop a The Maille Boutique near Place Vendome

Those of you going to Paris before the Provence Tour will find a large Maille boutique in the center of Paris, at the Place de la Madeleine, sits a beautiful Maille boutique. Here, hundreds of bottles and dozens of beguiling mustards scale the walls with distinctive, complex and audacious flavors to satisfy even the most demanding taste buds. The Maille Mustard Sommelier offers you to taste. Taking pride of place is a row of gleaming, ingeniously engineered pumps. For it’s here, drawn by hand, that your selection of condiment is freshly filled into earthenware pots and carefully sealed with cork stoppers. Delicate vinegars, playful vinaigrettes, luxurious tableware and unique gifts for food lovers are also to be found, all accompanied by inspiring food tips and recipes to take home with you.

Amora

An offshoot of the Maille brand, Amora mustard is one of the most popular mustards in France, found in nearly every kitchen. With the tagline “fine et forte” it’s much spicier than a regular Dijon–and you can even find the “extra forte” version, a rich and spicy condiment that will make your sinuses tingle. While brands like Maille and Pommery come in beautiful bottles with beautiful labels (and the price tags to match), Amora is a more minimalist design and can be found in French grocery stores for under €2, and often comes in simple little jars that double as an elegant little stemless wine glass.
Where to find it: Amora is supremely easy to find in any market in France, and you can find them in some supermarkets in England. Amora on Amazon

Edmond Fallot

Edmond Fallot has been crafting world-class French mustard at their family-run mustard mill in Burgundy since 1840. Today, the business sells vinegar, relish, and mustard in plenty of varieties and flavors. Edmond Fallot’s traditional mustards are a creamy Dijon-style mustard and a whole grain variety made with whole mustard seeds. In addition, specialty flavors include walnut, basil, honey, fig, and more.
Where to find it: You can find the original Dijon and whole grain styles at gourmet shops around the country, or order one of the specialty flavors from Amazon. You can also visit the Edmond Fallot boutiques in Beaune and Dijon.

Maison Pebeyre

This mustard from one of France’s oldest family-run truffle houses in France is rare, luxurious, and quite hard to find. Since 1897, Maison Pebeyre has earned a reputation for quality truffles, shipping their exquisite products all over the world. Using their world-class truffles, Maison Pebeyre has created a suite of gourmet products, including white truffle oil, truffle mayonnaise, truffle salt, truffle honey, and their famous truffle mustard.
Where to find it: Your best bet for finding a jar of Maison Pebeyre’s truffle Dijon in the wild is to visit a local gourmet shop that specializes in French products.

We're always careful to tell our guests, that much like an evolving appreciation of French wines, once you indulge and develop a taste for the incredible French mustards, French's (made in Missouri) will likely never do...

Day 3 ~ Monday: A Masterclass in Light, Stone, and Stars

Get ready to lace up your walking shoes, because Monday, Day 3 is a high-energy journey through the very landscapes that defined the Impressionist Movement and the rugged beauty of medieval France. This is Provence at its most cinematic!

Morning: Walking in the Footsteps of Van Gogh

Van Gogh's Magical City of Arles with
The
Rhône River in the background
Our day begins with the hum of the Coffee & Juice Bar, followed by a full Provençal Breakfast Buffet to fuel the adventure ahead. By 8:30 AM, we’ll line up the cars rally-style, sync our radios, and motor out from Chateau du Soleil.

Our destination is one of France's most famous cities; Arles, a UNESCO World Heritage site where ancient history and high art collide, and the sun-drenched city along the mighty Rhône River where Vincent Van Gogh experienced his most prolific period of creativity.

The Mighty Rhône; The Lifeblood of Arles

The "Vibe": The Rhône in Arles is wide, powerful, and deeply cinematic. Because the city sits at the head of the delta, the river has a sense of "opening up" toward the Mediterranean. It provides a constant, cool breeze that cuts through the Provençal heat and creates a shimmering, reflective light that has drawn artists to its banks for centuries.

Artistic Significance: This is the water that Van Gogh famously captured in Starry Night Over the Rhône. He was fascinated by the way the gas lamps of the city reflected as long, golden beams across the dark, swirling blue of the water. Even today, a sunset walk along the river quays feels like stepping directly into one of his sketches.

Historical Significance: For the Romans, the Rhône was a "superhighway" of antiquity. It’s the reason Arles became such a powerful imperial city; it served as a vital trade link between the heart of Europe and the Roman Mediterranean. Archaeologists are still pulling treasures from its silty floor, including the world’s oldest intact Roman marble bust of Julius Caesar, discovered right in the riverbed in 2007!

Our Private Walking Tour of Arles:

We’ll meet our expert guide, Isabelle, just outside the ancient city walls for a two-hour walking tour, that includes admission & entry into many of Arles  crowning jewels including;

  • The Roman Arena: We’ll take you inside these architectural marvels, which have stood for nearly 2,000 years. This massive Arena, modeled after the Colosseum in Rome, once hosted 20,000 spectators for gladiatorial combat, and is still used for events today including the famous Bullfights!
  • The Roman Amphitheatre: Once the cultural centerpiece of Roman Gaul, this elegant semi-circular theater was dedicated to the arts and remains a stunning testament to the city’s imperial past.
  • The Van Gogh Connection: As Isabelle leads us through the city, you’ll stand within the living canvases of his most iconic works ~ from the vibrant glow of the Café Terrace at Night and the golden brilliance of his Sunflowers to the shimmering reflections along the riverbanks that inspired Starry Night Over the Rhône.

As Isabelle leads us through the city, from the towering Roman Amphitheatre to the vibrant café terraces that look exactly like the canvases painted over a century ago, you’ll feel the history in every cobblestone...

Afternoon: Medieval Heights & Immersive Art

As we leave the plains of Arles, our "rally" continues as we wind our way up high into the Alpilles Mountains. This French National Park is a striking landscape of jagged, sun-bleached limestone peaks and ancient olive groves. The "rugged beauty" here is legendary ~ the wind-sculpted white stone looks like a mini-version of the Alps, providing a dramatic, cinematic backdrop as we approach Les Baux-de-Provence; The "Village in the Sky."

  • Leisure & Lunch in Les Baux-de-Provence: Perched precariously high-up on a rocky spur of the Alpilles, this medieval stronghold offers some of the most breathtaking views in all of France. You’ll have free time to explore its ancient winding stone alleys, browse the artisan boutiques, and enjoy lunch on your own & at your leisure in a sun-drenched bistro... You'll love this medieval Village... Les Baux is just beautiful!

  • Carrières de Lumières: We’ll regroup for a truly "magnificent & mind-bending" experience tucked deep underground inside the very heart of the Alpilles’ limestone. We’ll enter the massive, cool depths of these former quarries (where the famous Bauxite mineral was first discovered!) to witness the world-renowned 3D light show where it all first started! This is no city theater or gymnasium; This is a massive underground stone quarry where multi-dimesional moving media is projected throughout the various caves of a giant stone quarry!  Towering walls and massive ramps are transformed into a spectacular moving gallery of masterpiece paintings, set to a soaring soundtrack ~ it is beautiful, magical and utterly massive!

Evening: The Grand "Soirée Blanc"

After a quick dip in the pool to refresh back at the Villa, it’s time for the crown jewel of our social calendar: Soirée Blanc!  ~ The White Party

As the sun sets, we’ll gather around the pool ~ everyone dressed in their whites ~ for Soirée Blanc ~ an Outdoor BBQ in the Gardens under the Provençal stars. We’ve lined up our local favorite Duet; L'Éreinte Chaleureuse  to set the mood, while the The Champagne Bar flows freely. Between the incredible foods, the wines, the music, the gardens, the dancing, the sunset and the warm night air, this will create memories of your Provençal vacation that will last a lifetime!

Here's a couple videos to give you a feel for Soirée Blanc!

This whole week will be magical!

The Bonjour Effect: How to Unlock the Legendary Warmth of Provence

Whether you’re strolling through the lavender fields of the Luberon or ordering a café au lait in a bustling Marseille square, there is a persistent myth that French service is "cold" or "rude."

But here’s the secret: most of those awkward interactions aren’t about you being a foreigner ~ they’re about a few small cultural "tripwires" that are easy to avoid. If you want to unlock the true hospitality of Provence, you just need to align with the local rhythm. After coming here pretty often over the last 40 years,  we would tell you, when you "click" into the French flow, the doors swing wide open...

Here is how to move from being a "tourist" to a "welcome guest" with our favorite "Pro-Tips" for a seamless, friendly vacation.

Part 1: The "Golden Keys" of Interaction

1. Lead with the "Golden Key"

In France, Bonjour is more than a hello ~ it’s a sign of mutual respect... Think of it as the "open sesame" for every interaction. Whether you’re entering a bakery, a pharmacy, or a ticket counter, leading with a warm Bonjour signals that you see the person as an equal... A sincere smile magnifies the effect tenfold! It’s the fastest way to get a smile in return.

2. Embrace the "Polite Pause"

French culture values a calm, steady pace. After your initial greeting, try a one-second pause before asking your question. This tiny beat of silence shows you aren't rushing and that you aren't treating the person like a machine. It creates a relaxed space for the conversation to begin.

3. The Courteous Invitation

Before switching to English, offer a quick, polite ask: “Bonjour, est-ce que vous parlez anglais ?” (Pronounced: S-K-VU Par-lay on-glay?). This small gesture of asking permission is incredibly well-received. Most locals will happily switch to English and appreciate that you respected their native tongue first.

4. Celebrate Simple French

You don’t need to be fluent to be charming! The French are famously touched by the gesture of trying. Using basic essentials like Je voudrais (I would like) and S’il vous plaît (Please) shows you value the local culture. It’s about the heart you put into the words, not the perfect grammar.

Part 2: Tuning into the Local Frequency

5. The "Acoustic Hug": Soften Your Volume

Provence is a place of narrow streets, cozy bistros, and quiet squares. In the States, our energy is one of our best traits, but in a French bistro, the atmosphere is more like a shared living room. By lowering your voice just a notch or two, you blend into the local atmosphere. You’ll notice the locals relax around you, and you’ll feel like a true "insider."

6. Savoring the "Sincere" over the "Superlative"

Americans are wonderfully positive! We love to say things are “Awesome!” or “Life-changing!”  To a French ear, reserved praise actually carries more weight. Try using "Delicious" or "Beautiful" instead of "Incredible." You’ll find the locals take your compliments much more seriously when they feel measured and sincere.

7. Appreciate the Direct Style

French communication is refreshingly honest. A straight face or a firm "no" isn't a sign of unfriendliness; it’s just clear communication! Once you realize that a neutral tone is the cultural baseline, you can relax and enjoy the efficiency of the exchange.

8. Honor the "Living Room" Tradition

Small shops in France are treated with the same respect as someone’s private home. When you enter, say Bonjour; when you leave, always offer a Merci, au revoir. These "entry and exit rituals" are the hallmarks of a sophisticated traveler and are always met with appreciation.

Part 3: The Art of Slow Travel

9. Bring a Calm Energy

In the South, "slow" is often synonymous with "quality."  If you approach a counter with a patient, "no-rush" vibe, the staff will match that energy with helpfulness. If service seems slow, see it as a gift of time ~ a server won't bring the check until you ask because they don't want to interrupt your joy!

10. Value Their Time (and the Chef’s Vision)

If a shopkeeper looks busy, waiting for a natural break shows you are a respectful guest. Similarly, trusting the menu as it's written is the ultimate compliment to a chef... When you trust their expertise, you're guaranteed the best meal of your trip!

11. Use Tech as a Helping Hand

Translation apps are wonderful tools for bridge-building. Use them for tricky moments ~ like a specific car part or a dietary restriction ~ after you’ve already established a friendly connection... Locals find it very kind when you use a tool to ensure you’re both on the same page.

Believe in the Best

Most travelers have incredible, heartwarming experiences in France. While every country has its "grumpy" individuals, they are the exception, not the rule. When you arrive expecting kindness and following these simple rhythms, you’ll find that France is one of the most welcoming places on earth.

Ready to pack your bags? By shifting your approach just a little, the "difficult" reputation of the French disappears, replaced by a culture that is deeply proud and ready to welcome you. Remember, your smile alone can make a huge difference!

A Musical Intermission: The Anthem of the "Slow" Vacation

No trip to Provence is complete without a soundtrack that captures the art of doing absolutely nothing. We’ve selected this charming collaboration between Pink Martini and Pomplamoose as the perfect accompaniment to this post...

Their version of the classic French song "Sympathique" is a playful tribute to the joy of ignoring the "busy" world. With its famous refrain ~ “Je ne veux pas travailler” (I don’t want to work) ~ it’s the ultimate invitation to put down the to-do list, linger over your glass of rosé, dream about your upcoming vacation to France and simply enjoy the "Bonjour Effect."

Press play, sit back, and let the French rhythm take over...

Day 2 : A Sunday in the Luberon: Charming Hilltop Villages, Ochre Canyons, and Sweet Confections

Sunday morning at Château du Soleil begins with the gentle hum of the Juice & Coffee Bar for the early risers, followed by a full breakfast buffet to fuel a day of discovery. This is a day dedicated to the "Jewels of the Luberon" ~ where the golden stone of Gordes meets the fiery reds of Roussillon.

Morning: The "Acropolis" of Provence & Sacred Lavender

Our day begins in Gordes, a famous village so perfectly perched on its cliffside that it feels like a movie set. (it's actually been in a quite a few, as well as "Emily Paris") To get your bearings, Tommy and Terese will lead a short orientation walk through the labyrinthine of cobblestone alleys... Since it’s Sunday, the main square is often alive with a vibrant craft market ~ the perfect place to find local treasures before we "cut you loose" for your own exploration and shopping.

We’ll gather again outside at the historic Château de Gordes before heading to the iconic Abbaye Notre-Dame de Sénanque. We’ve timed this for the ultimate photo stop among the world-famous lavender fields... You’ll also have time to wander through their amazing bookstore and gift shop, where the monks offer everything from essential oils & perfumes to local honey.

Midday: The Colors of Roussillon

From the cool grey stone of the Abbey, we transition to the brilliant palette of Roussillon. Our first stop is a quick exploration of the Ochre Canyon, where the trails wind through surreal orange and red landscapes.

After a quick orientation walk through the village, you’re free to wander! Whether you want to browse the art galleries or find a sun-drenched bistro for lunch on your own, the afternoon is yours to enjoy at a leisurely pace. We’ll meet back near the parking lot for a beautiful scenic drive through the Provençal countryside as we return to the Estate.

Afternoon: Relaxation or "Le Cours de Pâtisserie"

Back at the Villa, the late afternoon is all about "Provençal time." You can retreat to the pool for a refreshing drink & a swim or find a quiet corner of the Estate to relax.

For those with a sweet tooth, Chef Fabien and Coralie will once again be hosting their optional Le Cours de Pâtisserie! This is so much more than a cooking class! This 1.5 to 2-hour French Pastry Masterclass merged with a Champagne party is an absolute highlight!  For €50 per person, you’ll learn the "hands on" secrets of making a delicate French dessert while enjoying an unlimited Champagne Bar and even a little dancing to French music! You’ll even get to take home your very own Le Cours de Pâtisserie logo apron as a souvenir of your culinary triumph. (if you're interested in in taking this French Pastry Class, you need to let us know now, so we can let Fabien & Coralie know how to prepare... ~ just drop us a short email and say: Count us in!)

Evening: Celebration Under the Stars

As the golden hour settles over the Luberon, the celebration begins. we'll start with Happy Hour and appetizers on The Terrace.

To cap off a perfect Sunday, we’ll gather for another of Chef Fabien and Coralie’s magnificent Alfresco Dinner Parties. There is truly nothing like the magic of sharing a meal and a laugh under the stars at Château du Soleil.

The Wine, Champagne, and Beer Bars will of course be open all throughout the evening’s festivities! This week of Provençal Adventure is young... and we're just getting started!

Day 1 ~ Arrival in Paradise: Your Provence Journey Begins!

click any photo to enlarge...

Day 1:  The wait is nearly over...  In just a few short months, the lavender will be prepping its bloom, the cicadas will be tuning their instruments, and we will finally be together for our Beautiful Villages of Provence Expedition! As we approach Saturday, June 20th, we know the excitement will be reaching a fever pitch... Whether you are spending a few pre-tour days navigating the chic boulevards of Paris before catching the TGV to Avignon, soaking up the glamour of the French Riviera, or exploring the vibrant docks of Marseille, all roads lead to our home-base at Chateau du Soleil just outside the stunning village of Venasque in The Luberon...

A Note from Your Hosts

Tommy and Terese will be heading over early on June 11th for a couple of fun days on the Riviera coast & in the mountains between Marseille and Nice, for a bit of vacation before our work begins... On the 15th, we'll move up to Venasque to begin final preparations for the Tour! We've got lots of work ahead of us to prepare for your arrival!  We always get so excited and we'll be counting down the minutes until we can welcome you to this little slice of heaven!

The "Golden Hour" of Arrival

We know you’ll all be eager to drop your bags and start the fun, but please note that the Villa is a hive of activity on Saturday!  To ensure the Estate is sparkling and every room is pristine, the property is closed to guests until 4:00 PM.  While it might sound tempting to arrive early to "just walk the grounds," we ask you not to...  Our crew needs every moment to work their magic. We appreciate your patience in helping us keep the arrival experience seamless!

The Plan for Saturday, June 20th:

  • 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM: The Grand Welcome. We’ll be waiting with open arms! As you arrive, we’ll have the Champagne flowing, ice-cold beer, and sodas ready to cut the summer heat.

  • Check-in & Chill-out: Once you’re settled into your room, feel free to take a nap & freshen up, or perhaps a refreshing dip in the pool or simply grab a drink & lounge under the Provencal Sun!

  • 6:00 PM: Orientation Walk & Talk: Join us for a casual Happy Hour... Grab a glass of Champagne as we stroll through the Estate, share some stories, and get you acquainted with your home for the week.

A Feast for the Senses

During our stroll, we'll walk around The Estate, and take you through the entire Villa... and touch on all the amenities of the property... you’ll meet our private French chefs, Fabien and Coralie. They’ll already be hard at work in the kitchen, filling the air with the scents of fresh herbs and roasting specialties.

Usually at around 7:15 PM, appetizers will be served on the Terrace outside the Solarium, followed by a magnificent dinner party under the loggia. Every evening meal begins with a crisp tossed salad, fresh baguettes, and French butter—if you haven't experienced it yet, prepare to have your life changed! French Butter is just amazing! And of course we'll have plenty of wonderful French Reds, Whites & Rosés on the table!

After the main course and a decadent French dessert, the evening truly begins:

  • The Wine: A curated selection of local Reds, Whites, and Rosés will grace the table every night.

  • The Sunset: This will be The Summer Solstice period & the days are long! The sun won't set until  9:30 PM, allowing us to sip after-dinner cordials while watching the sky turn those famous, fiery shades of Provençal oranges & reds...

  • The Party: With great music playing and the bar open until 10:00 PM, every night is a celebration! (And don't worry ~ if the conversation is still flowing when we're tearing down the bar, we always leave a few bottles out for the night owls... and you're of course welcome to stay up as long as you want, we just observe "quiet hours" after 11:30pm.  We just remind everyone that we're up & out early the next morning).

This is just Day One... This whole Tour is going to be a Mediterranean dream filled with swim parties, gourmet flavors, great views, adventures, fun experiences and the best company imaginable... Few things will make mark a on your life the way Provence will!  We can’t wait to see you in Venasque!

A Bientôt!

"Turn up the volume and let the journey begin!"

Over the next few weeks, here on The Blog, we'll feature some of the amazing places we'll be going on the expedition... We invite you to savor this information... Let it create anticipation... Think of these posts as appetizers... or paradoxically, as the French call them entrees... to what we think will be an incredible feast of the senses that we'll experience in just a couple short months...

The Soundtrack of the Countdown

As we count down the days until we meet in France, there is one song that perfectly captures this feeling as we wait for the big departure... Carly was pretty much an unknown back then... but "Anticipation" & "That's the way I always heard it should be" put her on the map almost overnight and in 1972 she had already won the Grammy for Best New Artist

Enjoy Carly Simon’s "Anticipation" ~ it’s the perfect anthem for

counting down the days to the adventure ahead

(ps; not the best quality video or audio; it's from 1971...)

Feel the Riviera Breeze: Our Unexpected Pre-Tour Adventure

Hello to all our upcoming Provence Tour guests!

As Terese and I finalize the details for our upcoming season at the Villa, we decided to head over to the French Riviera a few days early this June. There’s something magical about the Côte d'Azur in early summer ~ the scent of jasmine in the air, the brilliant turquoise of the Mediterranean, and that legendary "Blue Coast" light that inspired so many painters...

While we were scouting around for ways to make the most of a few free hours, we stumbled upon something that ~ to be honest ~ made us laugh at first. We saw pics and videos of these bright, quirky three-wheeled motorcycles with little car bodies buzzing along the Promenade des Anglais. They looked like something out of a vintage cartoon or a futuristic beach movie...

The company is called "NiceCar," and after our initial chuckle, curiosity got the better of us. We started digging into the reviews and were surprised to find that people absolutely rave about them... The more we read, the more we thought, “Why not?” So, we signed up!

It's a two-seater with motorcycle handlebars
and just one wheel in the rear...

What’s the Buzz About?

If you are planning to spend a few extra days in the Riviera region before or after joining us at the Villa, this might be the perfect addition to your itinerary.

Unlike a standard bus tour or a cramped rental car, these open-air vehicles offer a 360-degree view of the scenery. You actually drive them yourself in a guided caravan, following a lead vehicle. It’s the perfect middle ground for those who want the "wind in your hair" feeling of a scooter but with the stability and ease of a car...

The Itinerary

What really sold us was the route. The half-day tour takes you away from the city traffic and up into the dramatic cliffs of the Riviera. Here’s what we’re looking forward to:

  • The Views: The tour winds along the famous coastal roads, making frequent photo stops at overlooks that offer panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the luxury yachts dotting the harbors.

  • Mountain Villages: You’ll leave the coast behind to climb toward the perched medieval villages like Eze that define this region’s history.

  • A Scented Stop: Perhaps the most "French" part of the experience is a stop at a perfumery. You actually get to have a first-hand tour of the art of fragrance, seeing how the local flora is transformed into world-class scents.

Join the Fun!

We found the price to be incredibly reasonable for a half-day guided experience, especially considering how much ground you cover. It’s whimsical, it’s unique, and it’s a bit of an adventure ~ exactly the kind of "hidden gem" we love to find.

We’ll be sure to tell you all about our experience once we hit the road in early June, but if you’re the type who likes to book ahead, you can check out all the details here: NiceCar Riviera Tour via Viator.

Whether you’re exploring the coast in a three-wheeled car or relaxing by the sea with a glass of Rosé, we can’t wait to see you all soon at the Villa in Provence!

Villas, Vineyards, and Peace of Mind: Why Now is the Perfect Moment for Provence & Tuscany

As we look forward to our upcoming Tour Season ~ exploring the lavender fields of Provence and the rolling vineyards of Tuscany ~ we know some of you may have questions regarding recent headlines from the Middle East...

At Adventures To Tuscany, your peace of mind is our priority. We want to provide some clear context on why these events remain a world away from our quiet corners of Europe...

1.  Putting Distance into Perspective

The "Gulf Area" is geographically very distant from Western Europe. To put it into perspective:

  • Distance: Our tour regions in Provence and Tuscany are roughly 2,500 to 3,000 miles away from the center of the conflict.

  • Comparison: Traveling from our Villas in Provence or Tuscany to the Middle East is roughly equivalent to traveling from New York City to Los Angeles. Just as an event on the West Coast wouldn't impact your daily safety in New York, the localized conflict in the Gulf does not affect the safety or stability of the French and Italian countryside.

2.  What You Can Expect on the Ground

For all practical purposes, your experience on our Tour will be no different than what you are seeing at home in North America.

  • Safety: The U.S. State Department maintains standard travel advisories for both France and Italy, which remain open, welcoming, and totally safe for all travelers, and by all accounts, is not expected to change in any way.

  • Daily Life: Life in our small villages continues as beautifully as ever. The markets are bustling, the cafes are open, and the amazing "slow life" remains uninterrupted.

3.  Practical Implications: Inflation & The Gas Pump

While your physical safety is not a concern, global events can sometimes ripple through the global economy.

  • Fuel Prices: Since our Tours, as you already know, are done Expedition Style, you’ll be managing your own rental cars and fuel...  Much like here in the U.S., you may notice that gas prices could be slightly higher due to global market fluctuations. (For those of you who may be new to "driving in Europe" ~ their gas prices are always much higher than in the US). We suggest planning for this small variable just as you would for any road trip at home.
  • Cost of Goods & Services: While not necessarily related to happenings in the Middle East, you may notice that inflation, just like here in North America, has made goods & services a bit more expensive than in years past, but rest assured; The price you paid for your Tour already provides for  all of these things...
  • Your Price is Guaranteed:  Most importantlyunlike many Tour Operators,  we don't increase your Tour price based on foreign currency exchange rates, inflation, or our costs of doing business.  Despite any fluctuations in the price of local goods or services, your primary tour price will not change!  Your Tour price was locked in & guaranteed the moment you paid your deposit... It's just one of things that makes us different, and we take pride in honoring that commitment so you can focus on the experience, not the exchange rate...

4.  Our Commitment to You

Here at Adventures to Tuscany,  we constantly monitor official updates from both the U.S. State Department and our local partners in France & Italy. We have lots of friends and business connections throughout the regions where we operate, and we communicate with them year-round.  Their friendships and the information they share with us are invaluable.   We have operated our Tours for over 25 years through many global cycles, and countless conflicts... We wouldn’t be heading over there ourselves this summer if we didn't feel completely confident in the safety and joy of the region!

25 Years of Perspective: Navigating the Global Landscape

When you’ve been leading tours through the heart of Europe for a quarter of a century, you develop a unique perspective on the world... We often tell our guests: The headlines change, but the magic of the French and Italian countryside remains constant.

Over the last 25 years, Adventures To Tuscany has successfully navigated every major global cycle. We have learned through decades of experience how to separate "headline anxiety" from the reality on the ground in Provence and Tuscany.

A Proven Track Record of Resilience

Since our founding in 2000, we have safely operated our Tours through:

  • 9-11 The World Trade Center & Pentagon Tragedies  (2001)
  • The War in Afghanistan (2001)

  • The Iraq War (2003)

  • The Second Lebanon War (2006)

  • The Global Financial Crisis (2008)

  • The Arab Spring Revolutions (2011)

  • The Syrian Civil War (2011–Present)

  • The Annexation of Crimea (2014)

  • The Rise of ISIS (2014–2019)

  • The Russia-Ukraine War (2022–Present)

  • The Israel-Hamas Conflict (2023–Present)

  • The Recent Iran Conflict (2026)

Navigating the "Big Two"

In our history, only two events truly paused the world of travel, and we successfully navigated both with our community of travelers:

  • September 11th: We had a Tour group in Tuscany just 3 months before 9-11, and as the industry transformed, we helped our guests adapt to a new era of global security while maintaining the spirit of adventure.

  • The Global Pandemic: We steered our business and our registered guests through the quietest years in travel history by using what we call The Golden Rule...  honoring our contracts & commitments, totally refunding all tour guests, and returning to the trails of Europe the moment it was safe to do so.

Why This Matters for You;

If we have learned anything since 2000, it is that there is rarely a "perfectly quiet" year in global news. If travelers waited for a period of total global silence, these beautiful village markets and sun-drenched vineyards would never, ever be seen...

We wouldn’t be heading over to Provence ourselves this June, and preparing for Tuscany in September ~ if we didn't feel 100% confident. We’ve managed the logistics through much more turbulent times than these...  and we are ready to manage them for you now.

The Magic Awaits...

Beyond the headlines and the maps, lies the reason we do what we do: the sheer, restorative magic of the European countryside... Imagine waking up in a magnificent, rustically elegant, centuries-old Villa as the sun crests over the Luberon hills or the Tuscan vines. Picture yourself gathered around a long table for an extraordinary meal prepared by our private chefs, the air filled with laughter and the sound of local wine being poured at our open bars...  From the expertise of our private guides to the "only-with-us" unique experiences we’ve spent 25 years perfecting, these tours are designed to be a sanctuary of beauty and connection... We aren’t just traveling; we are immersing ourselves in a lifestyle where the world’s noise fades away, replaced by the simple, magnificent joy of a sunset over the Mediterranean or a perfect plate of handmade pasta. The table is set, the Villa is ready, and the magic is waiting for you...

We can’t wait to share a glass of wine and the incredible sunsets with you soon.

Please complete this simple form for us

Well, good morning campers, and happy Saturday!  So the countdown is on, and we're now down to just a little over 100 days from when we're departing & meeting up at Château du Soleil in Provence...  It's getting exciting now! And we know many of you are planning on heading over several days early to Tour other areas of France before coming to the Villa, so we need to get a little info from you before your departure...

First:  As the Official Tour Operator you've contracted with for OIGT (Organized International Group Travel), the legal and regulatory agencies both here in the USA & France now require that we have a copy of your passport on file, and that for safety and emergency purposes, we must have what they call a summary awareness of your whereabouts while you're traveling outside of the US on this trip...  And the Villa Management & local gendarmerie (in the region where the Villa resides) require we give them a copy of your Passport. (the same as any tour operator, cruise line or hotel does)

With this in mind, we need you to please fill out the OIGT Form and email it back to us:

What you'll see below is a photo of the OIGT Form.  We'll email you the full size document. please print it out, complete the form, (you can simply handwrite the info or type it in, whichever you prefer).  set your passport photo page on top of the form in the indicated spot, and simply snap a photo with your phone, and email it back to us at:  AdventuresToTuscany@gmail.com  with the subject line: "last name-OIGT" . (for example: JONES - OIGT) If you're traveling & sharing a room with your spouse or travel partner, we only need one form for the two of you, (with both passport pages on it) or if it's more convenient, each guest can forward their own form.

When you receive our email, (later today) could you please email the completed form back to us at your earliest convenience, but please, we need it no later than March 21st
don't bother to try to print out this photo... We'll email you the full size document

We know you'll be excited to get to The Villa... And you should plan on arriving between 4pm - 6pm on Saturday.  Just a reminder: You won't be able to actually come to the Villa before 4pm on Saturday, as we'll have a full cleaning staff on site all day, and it's very difficult for them to work around guests, so they won't allow us to open the security gates before 4pm... So as you plan your arrival day, please keep that in mind...

No matter how many times we tell everyone this, someone says to themselves; oh, let's just go a little bit early and walk around... Please don't be this person. It has never, in 25 years, worked out well... They will not allow you through the security gates before 4pm... and this will lead to you getting upset at us, and we unfortunately can not control this...

If you're flying into Marseille, or perhaps taking a train into Avignon, we suggest you use any extra time you may have on Saturday to explore one of those areas...  In both of those scenarios, you're only about an hour's drive from the Villa in Venasque...  Maybe find a nice little bistro to have a some lunch or a little charcuterie & a nice relaxing glass of wine... and do what the French do - some people watching!  If there's an urgent situation or some type of emergency & you think we can help - by all means, please call us: 610-657-7894

Know that we'll be there a week early getting ready for your arrival... We'll be welcoming you with open arms, and we'll have ice cold Champagne and Snacks waiting for you at the Villa!   As well as chilled refreshments including ice cold Prosecco's, Beers, Sodas, and Waters...  And of course we'll have the Ultimate French Wine Bar open and waiting for you with incredible French Rosés, Reds & Whites!

After we get each of you checked into your rooms, we'll give you a little time to relax, and freshen up, and then we'll get together at around 6:00 PM for a very casual Orientation to The Expedition & the Estate.  We'll have a little Happy Hour - and we'll take you on a short walk around The Villa and the property to familiarize you with the Estate before Dinner.  And our Chefs Fabian & Coralie will likely pass hors d'oeuvres around 7:30ish, with dinner served around 8ish (typically a little early by French standards)

So we want to give you our  phone numbers in case you need to reach us::
Tommy's cell # 610-657-7894
Terese's   cell # 484-410-1481
(you might want to put these phone #s into your phone's contact list now. To dial us while you're in France, is the same as dialing us in the US... there's no need to add any special dialing codes)

Once you return your completed  OIGT Form mentioned above, we will send you out a little packet with your Tour Vouchers, the address and a detailed map with the Villa marked on it, a GPS location pin for your cell phone and a handful of our Adventures to Provence luggage tags...  and lastly the password to be used at the security gate.  (we send this out at approximately 30 days before your departure)

Note: This map is not a map of France or even all of Provence, it is a very specialized large-scale map showing precise details of just the immediate  area around the Villa... and we will include very specific turn by turn directions for the last couple of miles to The Villa, as well as a video showing you where to turn into the Estate.   It's not that it's difficult, but it is rural and the turn by turn directions, if followed exactly, will get you right to The Villa very easily.

So that's all for now... we're looking forward to meeting up with all of you in Provence! It's just a couple months away now!

Please watch for our email (within the next 24 hours) with the OIGT Form in it, and email us the  completed form requested above at your earliest convenience... Please send to us at AdventuresToTuscany@gmail.com.   With the subject line:  lastname- OIGT

Thanks so much,
