🚗 Navigating the Roads of Romance: What to Expect Driving in the Luberon & Vaucluse

Get ready, adventurers! We are counting down the days until we are winding through the breathtaking landscapes of Provence together...  From hilltop villages to rows of fragrant lavender, the views are absolutely world-class.

To help you picture the journey and arrive feeling like a seasoned local, we wanted to give you a quick, fun preview of what it’s actually like behind the wheel here. Driving in rural France is an absolute joy, but it definitely comes with its own unique "Provençal personality!"

Here is what you need to know to drive like a pro:

1. The Charming (and Cozy!) Narrow Roads

The ancient roads connecting the stunning villages of the Luberon and Vaucluse weren't exactly designed with modern SUVs in mind. They were built for horse-drawn carts, which means they are beautifully narrow and lined with historic stone walls, hedgerows, or sweeping vineyards.

  • The Pro-Tip: Embrace the slow travel philosophy! Take your time, enjoy the scenery, and if you meet an oncoming car on a particularly snug stretch, just smile, pull over slightly, and share the road. It’s all part of the local dance...

2. Mind the Fossés (The Roadside Trenches)

Here is a quirky detail you won’t find in the average travel brochure: many of the rural, secondary roads in Provence are flanked by deep, open stone or dirt drainage ditches, known locally as fossés. Because there usually isn't a traditional paved shoulder, the edge of the road transitions right into these trenches to handle the sudden Mediterranean rain showers.

  • The Pro-Tip: Don't let them hug you! Keep your eyes focused down the center of your lane, rather than staring at the edge. If you need to let someone pass, look for a proper pull-out spot or a wider clearing rather than drifting into the grass.

3. The Great Roundabout Revolution (Les Ronds-Points)

Get ready to spin! You are going to encounter a huge amount of roundabouts in France. Intersection? Roundabout. Entering a town? Roundabout. Out in the middle of a beautiful valley? You guessed it! While they might feel a little dizzying at first, they are actually incredibly efficient ~ and honestly, they become downright fun once you master them.

  • The Pro-Tip: Yield to the traffic already in the circle, blend right in, and remember the golden rule of the rond-point: if you miss your exit, just stay in the circle and go around again! It’s the ultimate no-stress turn-around.

4. Ditching the Route Numbers for Town Names

If you're looking for big highway numbers on every sign, you won't find them here. Instead of route numbers, French road signs typically feature a cluster of arrows pointing toward the names of the next nearby towns or villages.

  • The Pro-Tip: Instead of memorizing "Route D900," just keep the name of your destination village (or the next major town in that direction) in mind. Follow the arrows for the town name, and it will lead you exactly where you need to go.

🏔️ The Ultimate Grand Finale: Le Provençal Classique Road Rally

Now, once you’ve mastered the local lanes, the roundabouts, and the fossés, it's time for the ultimate driving milestone: our legendary Le Provençal Classique Road Rally up Mont Ventoux! We teased this on the blog a while back, but let’s talk about the absolute thrill that awaits us.

Known as the "Giant of Provence," this towering, iconic peak rises majestically over the region and offers a driving experience of a lifetime. It is a thrilling, dramatic ascent packed with hair-raising switchbacks, sweeping alpine turns, and jaw-dropping panoramic views that open up as we climb above the tree line into the famous, moon-like white limestone summit.

Because Ventoux is a legendary bucket-list climb for the famous Tour de France, we will be sharing the mountain with an enthusiastic army of colorful bicyclists grinding their way to the top.

  • The Adventure Strategy: Driving this mountain is pure fun, but it requires your full focus! Keep a sharp eye out around every bend, give our two-wheeled friends plenty of space when passing, and use the wide, banked outside edges of the switchbacks to safely navigate the twists.

When we finally reach the summit, standing looking out over all of Provence with the wind in our hair, the shared sense of achievement is going to be unforgettable. This rally is the definition of true travel adventure! We'll mark our expedition up Mont Ventoux with a special celebration at the Summit!

💡 The Golden Rule: If you can visualize it now, you’ll conquer it easily when you arrive.

Think of these quirky roads, the swirling roundabouts, and the epic mountain climbs not as a challenge, but as the literal pathways to our next great discovery. They are the exact ingredients that create the best travel stories and the fondest memories you'll take home with you.

Pack your sense of adventure, leave the rushing behind, and get ready for the road trip of a lifetime ~ an adventure that would even make Thelma & Louise jealous!

Bon voyage and see you soon!

One important note: we love these guys in this video, but they claim you don't need an International Drivers Permit to rent / drive a car in France... As your Tour Operator, we must tell you this is no longer true... Whether or not they ask to see it at the car rental desk, LEGALLY you ARE required to have one...

Liquid Sunshine: Crafting the Perfect Provence Villa Bar

There is a distinct magic to late afternoons here at Chateau du Soleil in Provence... The fierce Mediterranean sun begins to soften, painting the sky in incredible shades of apricot and lavender, and a cool breeze sweeps through the plane trees...  Around here, we don't just let this hour pass by ~ we celebrate it. The apéritif (or simply "l'apéro") is a sacred daily ritual here at The Villa, a slow transition from the warmth of the day into the ease of the evening...

Lately, we’ve had a few guests ask us a great question: “What’s the true story behind this Wine Bar, and what kinds of wines might we expect ?”

So when we say "Open Bar," we mean it

If you've been on our Tours before, and on this trip we know several of you have, ~ you'll find that we continue to refine both our Cuisine and our Bar...  The price of your Beautiful Villages of Provence Tour includes unlimited access to our fully stocked Wine, Champagne, Prosecco, Beer, and Soft Drink Bar at the Villa. It’s not just open for dinner ~ it’s available all day, every day, anytime we are at the Villa up until 10:00 PM.

(And let’s be honest, we don’t want to shut down a good time! If everyone is enjoying themselves safely, we always leave a few bottles out when we start breaking down at 10:00 PM. We just like to gently remind everyone that we have a wonderful hilltop villages to explore the next morning... and we always have a schedule to keep!)

When you add up what a typical resort, upscale restaurant, or cruise ship charges per drink over a full week, this inclusion alone saves you hundreds of dollars. More importantly, it removes the "nickel-and-diming" friction from your vacation... You get to completely relax without ever looking at a price list or worrying about a running tab.

Beyond the Villa: A Curated French Wine Experience

While we are surrounded by breathtaking local landscapes~ including spectacular local rosés that have captured the highest honors from France’s top wine guides like Guide Hachette ~ our wine selections don't stop at the nearest vineyard lines!

Brad & Angelina's Provençal Rose - Their
famous Estate isn't too far away...
(
actually, today we think it's just Brad's Rose)
To bring you the very best of France, we partner with a trusted local wine consultant right in the heart of the region to source prestigious wines from top estates across the Côtes de Provence, the Rhône Valley, and other world-famous French terroirs. In France, these wine regions are called AOC's... Think of an AOC as the French government's ultimate stamp of authenticity and quality control; it strictly guarantees that a wine was crafted using traditional, centuries-old methods entirely within one specific, prestigious geographic region.

Are these $200 bottles of elite Bordeaux growth or rare Burgundy? No, of course not. But these are highly rated, upscale wines that you would typically pay $50 to $120 a bottle for in upscale French restaurants...  Most are award-winning AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) labels, premium Cru Classé rosés, and exceptional estate reds and whites, including wines from the Vacqueyras AOC, Gigondas AOC, Rasteau AOC, Beaumes-de-Venise AOC, Ventoux AOC, Bandol AOC, Tavel AOC, Cassis AOC, Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOand of course most famously The Champagne AOC ~ These are indeed the top AOC's in all of France!

If you know French wine, you will instantly recognize the world-class names on our shelves:

  • Château d'Esclans (Whispering Angel / Rock Angel)

  • Domaine Ott

  • Château de Miraval (Brad & Angelina's Estate)

  • Château Minuty

  • Château Pesquié

  • E. Guigal (Rhône Valley)

  • M. Chapoutier

  • Domaine de la Janasse

  • Château La Nerthe (Châteauneuf-du-Pape)

  • Château de Trinquevedel (Tavel)
  • Piper-Heidseick
  • Veuve Clicquot
  • and a beautiful rotation of independent, boutique Provençal domaines.
If you want to truly unlock the soul of Provence and live like a local, look no further than the glass in your hand... While many of us grew up associating pink wine with the sugary-sweet bottles of decades past, authentic Provençal rosé is a completely different universe... Here, it is the ultimate symbol of effortless style ~ bone-dry, beautifully crisp, mineral-forward, and elegantly pale...  In France, drinking rosé isn’t just a preference; it’s a lifestyle statement...   It's the sophisticated soundtrack to every sun-drenched terrace, every poolside laugh, and every golden afternoon under the plane trees...  To pour a glass is to instantly blend into the chic, timeless rhythm of the French Riviera...

A Very Special Dinner Treat

While our daily bar is spectacular, we always love to surprise you...  And every now then, throughout the Tour, we'll bring out a few very special, premium, cellared bottles of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and bold Gigondas to perfectly pair with the meal!

The "Beautiful Villages" Difference vs. Mass-Market Bus Tours

To truly appreciate the value of the Villa’s open wine bar, it helps to look at what the big, mass-market corporate bus tours do. On those mega-tours, you are often left to fend for yourself for half of your dinners. When wine is included, it’s usually a single glass of vin de table ~ bulk "box wine" purchased by the metric ton and served in unmarked pitchers.

We don't do box / bulk wine... We spend a lot of time to bring you offerings at our bar that we can be proud of...  These are not generic carafes of red, white and pink wines...  At our Villa, every single bottle is certified AOC,  corked, sealed, and clearly labeled. You can read the estate, appreciate the vintage, and experience true, authentic French winemaking.

Sparkling Under the Provençal Stars! 🇫🇷🍾

There is something inherently celebratory about the sound of a popping cork, which is why you will always find an incredible selection of bubbles ready at the bar. But here is where our Provence bar gets truly special: we feature both true French Champagne and beloved regional sparkling stars.

Guests often ask us: “What exactly is the difference between Champagne and our regional sparkling wines?”

  • True French Champagne: We love supporting excellent, highly rated independent houses and exceptional mid-market Champagne producers... Champagnes which in local restaurants here in Provence in the €75 to €90 range. You'll find beautifully crisp, elegant, and authentic bottles on the bar from celebrated houses like Piper-HeidsieckCanard-Duchêne,  Nicolas Feuillatte, Moet & Chandon,  or artisanal gems like Champagne A. Bergère. They bring that unmistakable, complex toastiness and luxury that only real Champagne can offer.

  • Crémant de Provence & Limoux: For a vibrant, joyful, and regional twist, we also keep the bar stocked with premium Crémants. Crafted using the exact same traditional method as Champagne but utilizing local grapes, these bring bright, fresh notes of crisp green apple, white peach, and wild citrus.
  • Authentic Italian Prosecco: While we love the elegant luxury of a chilled bottle of true French Champagne on the bar, you’ll also find plenty of crisp, joyful Italian Prosecco ready to bring a touch of vibrant, sun-drenched brightness to your afternoon.

Pro tip: For the ultimate apéro experience, follow the time-honored European tradition: top your Aperol with our lively Italian Prosecco rather than Champagne ~ its bright, clean notes of green apple and fresh pear are the exact flavor profile designed to let that bitter orange botanical pop perfectly...

Our bubbles don't take themselves too seriously ~ they are light, incredibly refreshing, and designed to be enjoyed fresh, making them the absolute perfect companion for a warm, carefree afternoon on the terrace.

And of course, because we love a great sun-drenched apéro, there will absolutely be Aperol and local Pastis (like Ricard or Henri Bardouin) on hand to mix up a classic Aperol Spritz or a traditional milky-yellow glass of l'or blanc (white gold) under the shade of the trees!

The Ritual (Pastis): You cannot have a Provence bar without this anise-flavored liqueur. Serving it is an art form: pour a small splash of Ricard or an artisanal Pastis Henri Bardouin into a glass, and serve it alongside a classic ceramic pitcher of ice-cold water. Watch it turn from clear amber to a cloudy, milky yellow ~the literal color of a Provençal summer.

For a truly French Classic:  Provençal Death in the Afternoon ~ invented by Ernest Hemingway in the 1930s ~

  • Step 1: Pour a tiny splash (about 1/2 ounce) of Ricard Pastis into a chilled Champagne flute

  • Step 2: Top it up with crisp Champagne.

  • Step 3: Watch it cloud up beautifully, and garnish with a tiny sprig of fresh mint or a twist of lemon peel.

The cold Champagne creates a beautiful, shimmering, opalescent pearl color in the glass ~ a truly authentic, upscale taste of the French art de vivre!

More Than Just Wine: Premium French & European Beers

Not a wine drinker? No problem at all. Our fridge is always packed with a fantastic selection of upscale European and classic French beers, featuring:

  • Kronenbourg 1664 & 1664 Blanc (The classic premium French lagers)

  • Meteor Blonde (A crisp, refreshing favorite from Alsace)

  • La Cagole (The iconic craft blonde beer born down the road in Marseille)

  • Pelforth Blonde or Brune

  • Heineken, Stella Artois, Beck's, and Guinness

  • A full selection of premium soft drinks, artisanal French lemonades & Iced Teas

Savor the Moment ~ You're on Vacation!

When we return to the Villa in the late afternoons after a beautiful day of exploring, the driving is done for the day. You are home.

Feel free to pour a glass, sit out under the plane trees, and drink in those incredible, sweeping valley views. There are no restaurant checks to worry about, no overpriced wine lists to navigate, and no hidden fees. Just incredible drinks, great company, and total relaxation.

A Secret French Tradition: After-Dinner Digestifs

While the main bar is always buzzing, the magic doesn't stop when dinner winds down. Every evening as the final plates are cleared, we like to bring a time-honored French tradition right to the table: The digestif.

To wrap up our evening meal, we feature a rotating selection of special, authentic French after-dinner cordials served right at the dinner table. Because these are hand-selected, premium specialties, you won’t find them sitting out at the main bar during the day. Instead, they are poured as a final, elegant note to a perfect meal ~ a little ritual to aid digestion and spark good conversation long into the night under a blanket of stars.

Expect to savor classics like:

  • Chartreuse (The legendary herbal liqueur crafted by Monks)

  • Grand Marnier & Cointreau (Smooth, warming, and vibrant orange elixirs)

  • Calvados (An elegant apple brandy from Normandy)

  • Fine Cognac or Armagnac

Santé!   Welcome to the good life...

🌿🇫🇷 Packing for Provence: The Midsummer Edition 🌿🇫🇷

So we're just about three weeks out from meeting up at Chateau du Soleil in Provence!  It's getting very exciting now!  Terese and I have started packing, as we're leaving on June 11th! We're sure many of you are starting to pack as well... And with that in mind, we wanted to remind you of a few things about your upcoming time in Provence...

Summer in The South of France is legendary for a reason, but it is not gentle... This is the season of long days, intense sun bouncing off white limestone, crowded village markets, cicadas singing at top volume, and beautiful, steep cobblestone streets that will punish anyone who didn’t pack correctly.

So no, this is not another generic “pack light and bring comfortable shoes” list. This is the Adventures To Provence insider version: the specific things you need to think about before heading to Provence for our Tour at the last week of June...

1. The Art of the Provençal Afternoon (and the Shoes You Need to Get There)

There is a distinct rhythm to midsummer in the South of France ~ a gentle slowing down that happens just as the afternoon sun reaches its peak. By the last week of June, the air in Provence is thick with the scent of wild thyme, rosemary, and the first sweet whispers of lavender. The warmth of the day coaxes you to step out of the sun and into the cool, stone-walled sanctuary of a centuries-old village...

This is the hour for the ultimate Provençal ritual...  You find a table shaded by a canopy of plane trees in a quiet village square. The constant, rhythmic song of the cicadas becomes the soundtrack to your afternoon. On the table? A chilled glass of pale, crisp Luberon rosé, a small bowl of local Picholine olives, and perhaps a slice of warm, savory pissaladière. There is absolutely no rush... The afternoon stretches out before you, light and unhurried.

This isn't just a break in the day; it’s a masterclass in joie de vivre. But to actually enjoy it, you have to get there first—and that means navigating hill towns like Gordes, Roussillon, and Venasque.

  • The Mistake: Bringing brand-new sandals, cheap flip-flops, or thin-soled shoes.

  • The Reality: The cobblestones in Provençal villages are ancient, uneven, and often steeply inclined. A normal day of market-browsing and village-scouting can easily rack up 12,000+ steps.

  • The Fix: Pack well-broken-in walking shoes or high-quality sandals with real arch support and grip. If you can, bring a second pair so your feet aren’t rubbing the same pressure points two days in a row. Leave the flip-flops for the Villa pool.

2. Pack for Historic Spaces, Not Just the Heat

Yes, June in the South of France is hot...  But our itinerary includes gorgeous historic churches, abbeys, and historic sites where respectful attire is either required or appreciated.

  • The Fix: Avoid relying solely on beachwear or ultra-short shorts for sightseeing days. For both men and women, lightweight trousers or shorts, breathable midi-dresses, or a light cotton shirt work perfectly.

  • The Secret Weapon: Keep a light linen /silk scarf or a thin kimono-style cover-up in your day bag. You can easily throw it over your shoulders whenever we step into a cool, sacred space.

3. Do Not Underestimate the Provençal Mosquitoes

The countryside is beautiful, but the local moustiques (especially the aggressive tiger mosquitoes) love the midsummer heat just as much as we do. They love outdoor restaurants, shaded gardens, and vineyard terraces.

  • The Fix: Bring your favorite, reliable insect repellent from home. While French pharmacies sell excellent anti-moustique products, you don’t want to waste precious tour time hunting them down after you've already been bitten.

4. Bring Sun Protection That Actually Works

The Mediterranean sun is incredibly powerful, and the heat doesn’t just come from above ~ it radiates back up at you from the white limestone cliffs, light stone walls, and open-air market squares.

  • The Fix: Pack high-SPF sunscreen, polarized sunglasses, and a sun hat you will actually wear (bonus points if it packs flat!).
  • Hydration Strategy: If you've been watching the news this week, you already know Europe has famous heat waves...  Bring the water bottle we sent you... these are the longest days of the year & it will likely be very warm...  While you'll be enjoying plenty of crisp rosé and espresso, staying hydrated during our daytime village strolls is essential for beating the midday fatigue...
  • Rain Gear: We've rarely had rain in Provence, but we have had it! We always each pack both a very small travel umbrella & a super-lightweight rain jacket... we suggest you do too!

5. Ditch the Tight, Heavy, and Jet-Black Clothes

Jet-black looks chic in photos, but under the blazing June sun in a Luberon vineyard, tight, synthetic black fabrics feel like a personal greenhouse.

  • The Fix: Embrace the classic Southern France aesthetic... Pack loose, breathable fabrics like linen, lightweight cotton, and silk blends. Loose shirts, flowing skirts, and airy trousers are exactly how the locals stay elegant without melting. The goal is to look effortlessly put-together while remaining perfectly cool.

6. Check Your High-Heat Hair Tools

France uses 220V electricity. While your phone, tablets, and camera chargers are likely dual-voltage and just need simple plug adapters, American hair straighteners, curling irons, and blow dryers usually are not.

  • The Fix: Check the tiny text on your hair tools. If it doesn't explicitly say 100–240V, leave it at home. Plugging a 110V American styling tool into a French outlet ~ even with an adapter ~ can fry the tool, melt the plug, or blow the fuses at the Villa. Consider investing in a dual-voltage travel version instead. (they're very inexpensive )

7. Choose a Secure Crossbody Day Bag

Provence is incredibly safe, but summer crowds at bustling weekly markets (like the ones in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue or Saint-Rémy) are prime targets for opportunistic pickpockets.

  • The Fix: Leave the open tote bags and heavy backpacks behind. Bring a secure, lightweight crossbody bag with a zipper that you can easily keep in front of you.

8. Travel Light (The Villa Freedom Rule)

Dragging massive, oversized suitcases through historic train stations, up Villa staircases, or across gravel driveways is the quickest way to ruin a vacation mood before it even begins. Your of course welcome to bring as much luggage as you'd like, but know that no matter how long your trip is, you truly don't need anything larger than one medium size suitcase (24" - 26").

  • The Fix: Pack for 4 or 5 days and plan to mix and match. The laundry facilities at our Villa allow for refreshing your wardrobe, meaning you absolutely do not need a brand-new outfit for every single day of the trip. A sleek carry-on and a great day bag will give you total freedom of movement... And know that the vibe of Provence and of this Tour is casual...

9. Keep a Small "Just-in-Case" Pharmacy Kit

French pharmacies are world-class, but you don't want to be looking for one late at night because your feet have a blister or your eyes are dry from the travel days.

  • The Fix: Pack a small pouch with the basics: blister cushions, your preferred pain reliever, an antihistamine, and any personal daily medications. (We always have a small first-aid kit with the basics at the Villa)

10. Digital Prep Before We Head Out

When we are exploring deep in the Provençal countryside, cell service can occasionally be spotty near old stone structures or winding gorge roads.

  • The Fix: Download your flight details, offline Google Maps of the region, and any personal digital documents to your phone before leaving the hotel or Villa Wi-Fi.

  • The Lifesaver: consider slipping a small, fully charged power bank into your day bag. Between taking photos of the gorgeous landscapes and translating menus, your phone battery will drain faster than you think!

To our upcoming guests: pack your linen, leave the expensive watch behind, and get ready to master the art of the Provençal afternoon. We can't wait to welcome you to the South of France!

À bientôt! 🇫🇷✨

Navigating Provence: Your Friendly Guide to the French Roundabout

Bonjour, travelers!   As we put the finishing touches on our upcoming Provencal Adventure, we want to make sure you feel completely confident and relaxed the moment you turn the key in your rental car...  Driving through the sun-drenched landscapes of The South of France is an absolute dream...  the lavender fields, the towering plane trees, and the winding hillside roads are pure magic!

But as you navigate between our favorite villages, you are going to encounter a staple of French road engineering. Specifically, you’re going to see roundabouts (traffic circles). A lot of them!

In fact, France has more roundabouts than any other country in the world! For our guests coming from parts of the US where traffic circles are rare, they can feel a little intimidating at first...  Don't worry ~ once you know the rhythm, they are incredibly efficient, safe, and actually quite fun...

Here is everything you need to know to tackle the French rond-point like a local.

Rule #1: Look for the Lines (Who Has the Right of Way?)

Back in the old days, French traffic circles used a confusing rule where cars entering the circle had priority. Today, on 99% of the roundabouts we will encounter in Provence, it is exactly the opposite: traffic inside the circle has the absolute right of way.

  • As you approach: Look at the asphalt at the entrance of the roundabout. You will see a dashed white line painted across the lane, usually accompanied by a triangular yield sign that says "Cédez le passage" (Yield/Give Way).

  • What to do: Slow down, look to your left, and yield to any traffic already in the circle. If it’s clear, you don't even need to come to a complete stop—just roll right on in!

Rule #2: Master the Turn Signals (Les Clignotants)

The secret to a stress-free roundabout is communication. Because things move quickly, French drivers rely heavily on turn signals.

Think of the roundabout as a clock face, where you are entering at 6 o'clock:

  • If you are taking the very first exit (3 o'clock, turning right): Put your right blinker on before you even enter the circle, and keep it on until you exit.

  • If you are going straight through (the 12 o'clock exit): Do not use a blinker when entering. Drive past the first exit, and the moment you pass it, flip your right blinker on to show everyone you are leaving at the next turn.

  • If you are turning left (the 9 o'clock exit or further): Put your left blinker on before entering. This tells everyone behind and ahead of you, "I'm staying in the circle for a while!" Keep it blinking as you pass the early exits. Then, just as you pass the exit before the one you want, switch to your right blinker to signal your departure.

Rule #3: Which Lane Should You Pick?

Many of the roundabouts in the countryside are simple, single-lane circles...  But around larger towns like Avignon or Aix-en-Provence, you’ll see two-lane roundabouts.

  • The Golden Rule: When in doubt, stay in the right-hand (outer) lane.

  • You can legally use the outer lane for any exit you need. The inner (left) lane is technically reserved for drivers bypassing the first few exits to turn left, but sticking to the right lane keeps things simple and ensures you never get "trapped" on the inside when your exit pops up.

💡 The Best Part About a Roundabout?

If you miss your exit, there are no penalties! Unlike missing a turn on a highway, you don't have to drive miles out of your way. If you aren't sure which exit matches our itinerary, simply stay in the circle and go around a second (or third!) time until you spot the right sign. It’s the ultimate driving safety net.

We promise that after your first day of driving through the stunning Provencal countryside, handling these circles will become second nature. Pack your sunglasses, get your favorite driving playlist ready, and we will see you in Provence! (remember; that while you are with us in Provence, you will have a two-way radio with you in the car, and we will be talking to you, and giving you directions about which exit to take... but again, we just want to give you fare warning, in case your not familiar with Roundabouts!

Safe travels / Bon voyage!

The Story Behind Tracy Chapman’s "Fast Car"

Written in 1986 while Tracy Chapman was a 21-year-old college student, "Fast Car" was born from her childhood in a working-class neighborhood in Cleveland, Ohio. Raised by a single mother, Chapman watched families around her get trapped in cycles of low-wage work and systemic gridlock...  The song’s characters were composites of real people she knew; dynamic, hopeful individuals just waiting for a break, using the idea of a "fast car" as a powerful, immediate symbol of absolute freedom and escape.

When she released her acoustic debut in 1988, folk music was entirely out of fashion in an era dominated by hair metal and synth-pop. The song seemed destined for cult status until a literal twist of fate on June 11, 1988, at the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute Concert at Wembley Stadium.

Chapman had already played a minor afternoon set and was backstage when superstar Stevie Wonder suffered a technical disaster right before his prime-time performance. With a massive gap in a live global broadcast reaching millions, panicked producers grabbed Chapman and pointed her toward the stage. Armed with nothing but her acoustic guitar, she delivered a mesmerizing, raw performance of "Fast Car." By Monday morning, record stores worldwide were overwhelmed with demands for the album, launching her into instant global stardom.

The song made history all over again recently. Country star Luke Combs, who grew up listening to the track on a cassette tape in his dad's truck, released a deeply respectful 2023 cover. His version topped the charts, earning Chapman the honor of becoming the first Black woman to win Song of the Year at the Country Music Awards. The ultimate climax arrived at the Grammy Awards, where a notoriously private Chapman stepped out of retirement to perform the track as a breathtaking duet with Combs... proving that some songs, much like the perfect road trip in Provence,  possess a timeless magic that connects us all across generations and genres...

Can You Hear Me Now? A Guide to Using Your Cell Phone in France

can you hear me now???
Hi everyone! We’ve had a guest ask for info on using your cell phone in France... There are certainly many options...

Firstly, know this: If you do nothing at all, your phone will likely work just fine from Europe, albeit the pay-per-use cost per minute, data, & text rate will usually be significantly higher.

Which option works best for you depends on who your carrier is and how much you think you'll use your phone. We provide you with free Wi-Fi at the Villa... which means that you can use your home plan's amenities at the Villa without any extra cellular charges!

So, if you don't plan to use your phone for much, you'll still have Wi-Fi available at the Villa. But if you're planning on "being accessible at all times," want to be able to receive emails, calls & texts from the US while out and about, want to post to Facebook, Instagram, or perhaps use your phone as your GPS mapping program, then you'll probably want to have some sort of international plan in place.

many of our guests use their phones
for their map  program
People often ask us what we do personally; Terese and I have Apple iPhones and we were always on the AT&T system...  and we always signed up for their ATT International Day Pass. The International Day Pass is currently $12 per day on the days you use it. It includes unlimited talk and texts and then uses the data from your home plan... (and they charge for only the first 10 days of usage per each billing cycle). If you're a couple using two phones, and the second phone is on the same account, AT&T will only charge you $6 per day for the second phone (again for a maximum of 10 days per billing cycle).

But we've just recently switched to T-Mobile, where they offer free unlimited texting & basic data with voice calls at 25 cents/minute. They also offer high-speed data passes (like a 10-day pass for $35) if you need faster internet.

Here is a quick look at the other major options:

  • Verizon has similar plans. Their TravelPass is currently $12/day for most international destinations and is very similar to the AT&T plan mentioned above.

  • T-Mobile, on many of their Go5G and Magenta calling plans, offers free unlimited texting & basic data (though throttled to 2G speeds, which can be quite slow for modern apps!) with voice calls at 25 cents/minute. They also offer high-speed data passes (like a 10-day pass for $35) if you need faster internet.

And, lastly (regardless of who your carrier is), if your phone is "unlocked" (it probably is), you can alternatively buy a prepaid physical SIM card in Europe or simply download an eSIM (a digital SIM card via apps like Airalo or Ubigi) online before you even leave home. This is probably the least expensive option for data-heavy users...

Ultimately, we suggest you consult your carrier for their advice on what will work best for you individually.

And again, you can always use WhatsApp for free with the Wi-Fi at the Villa!

Again, while we always try our best to provide up-to-date and accurate information, plans change all the time. We strongly suggest you check with your own carrier for the best plan and details for your individual needs.

🇫🇷 Day 8: Au Revoir, Provence! 🇫🇷

A Morning of Reflection at Château du Soleil

After a week that has felt like a lifetime of discovery, the morning has finally arrived to say our farewells. The early morning light fills the Villa and washes over the vineyards & olive groves one last time, offering a quiet, sacred moment of reflection.  If you have the time, grab your coffee and take a slow walk through the gardens, breathe in the crisp morning air, and let the beauty of everything you’ve experienced over the last week settle deeply into your heart.

To make the most of our last day and final Mediterranean sunrise, we have arranged an early start:

  • 5:30 AM: The Coffee and Juice Bar opens for those needing to leave early, or wanting a quiet, reflective moment to enjoy Château du Soleil one last time.

  • 7:00 AM – 8:00 AM: An abbreviated Breakfast buffet.

As the aroma of fresh espresso wafts through the Villa, the atmosphere will feel a  bit different than it did just seven days ago... We started this journey as a group of individuals, perhaps wondering what the week would hold... Today, we sit at this table not as strangers, but as a family bound by shared laughter, unforgettable moments, and the beautiful rhythm of this special place...

The Gift of Connection: The Soul of Provence

Together we will have journeyed from the sun-drenched valley floor of the Rhöne River to the soaring summit of Mont Ventoux... navigated the winding backroads on our Le Provençal Classique Road Rally, and stood in awe beneath the ancient arches of the Pont du Gard. Whether it was the elegance of our Soirée Blanche ~ celebrating in white under the Provençal stars ~ the laughter shared over our meal at Le Belvédère, or that perfect afternoon of "Art de Vivre"at Château Pesquié, we will have truly lived The Soul of Provence together…

These aren't just memories; they are the colors and flavors of Provence that we'll carry home with us...

Before the luggage is loaded, take a moment to look around at the faces of the friends beside you and truly reflect on how fortunate we all are...  In a world that moves so quickly, we were granted the rare gift of time ~ time to slow down, to appreciate the poetry of a perfect sunset, to savor incredible foods & wines, and to truly experience the world in a way few others get to do ...

The true magic of this week won't just be the breathtaking landscapes or the historic villages; it will be the fact that we get to experience them together as an intimate group...' We'll share the awe of discovering hidden corners, the joy of raising a glass at long lunches, and the warmth of genuine, heartfelt conversations... The laughter we share and the bonds we forge will weave  us into each other’s stories. We came for an adventure, but we are leaving with a collection of lifelong friends and a treasure trove of memories that time cannot fade...

Our Final Send-Off & Practicalities

  • 8:00 AM – 9:00 AM: Our final check-out window.

  • Note on Departure: Guests must be packed and ready to depart the property no later than 9:30 AM.

As we load up our cars, there will undoubtedly be tight hugs, a few tears, and promises to stay in touch... As you head down that long winding driveway and look back at Château du Soleil one last time, you won't just look back on a trip, you will look back on a profound chapter of your life...  You'll carry a piece of this region, and a piece of each other, home with you... With a full heart, a renewed spirit, and a deep sense of gratitude for the incredible fortune of this journey, we hope you'll walk away from this week going, “WOW, This has been, without a doubt, one of the best vacations of my life...”

A Sincere Thank You From Our Family to Yours

From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for having the adventurous spirit to join our Beautiful Villages of Provence Expedition

But this isn't goodbye. Many of you have been part of our family for decades, while others were brand new to us just this last week... Regardless of how long we've known you, we want you to know how incredibly proud and honored we are that you trusted us to lead you on this latest adventure... We consider every one of you a member of our Adventures To Tuscany Family.

Arrivederci, Deep Gratitude, and Lasting Connections

This isn't the last you’ll hear from us... We’ll be in touch via our annual newsletter to let you know what we’ve been up to and to announce future tour dates... And we truly hope you’ll keep in touch with us, and hopefully each other…  Our groups, as you've seen by now, are very small, and it affords us the ability to become friends with all our guests... So please keep in touch... We love hearing from all the folks we’ve shared these experiences with!

Safe travels, dear friends...   Arrivederci ~ until we meet again...

A lot of folks thought Kenny Loggin's song "This is it" was a love song... but it wasn't! He wrote his 1979 hit "This Is It"  not as a love song or a dance track, but as an urgent rallying cry for his ailing father... At the time, Loggins's father was in the hospital facing a risky cardiovascular surgery and had effectively given up, telling his son; "This is it" - he didn't want the surgery & he was ready to die...     Frustrated and desperate, Loggins wrote the song as an emotional, tough-love plea demanding his father fight for his life...  a sentiment perfectly captured in the lyric, "Make up your mind."   His father was emotional over the song, and the push worked: his father found the resolve to undergo the procedure and survived for several more years... take a listen to the lyrics with a fresh perspective...

The Checklist...

So we're down to just about 30 days out,  and as we get closer to your departure date, many guests start to worry about forgetting things that they may want to do, or bring with them to France...

It's usually at this point that expectations start bubblin' with anticipation!   And as you get closer to your departure, we strongly suggest you dedicate a basket and start putting things in it that you don't want to forget...   We've tried to put together this comprehensive checklist, but theres no doubt, we missed things... and by all means, don't feel like you have to bring all of these things... just bring what you want to...

There will be stores to buy things, and in fact, that's fun... but remember, it does eat up your valuable time... the most important things you need are your Passports, International Drivers License, credit cards, Euros / access to cash (we suggest atm/debit card)... and ultimately with just those things, you'll likely get by just fine... most everything else we mention here is just for your safety, comfort and convenience...

So here's our attempt at a checklist:
  • Passports (we suggest you also take a photo of this and email it to yourself)
  • stop your mail and newspaper delivery / turn off water / adjust thermostat/water heater
  • leave/email a copy of itinerary with hotel addresses, phone #'s, etc with family or friends
  • pack a personal copy for yourself
  • tape a 3rd copy prominently visible inside your suitcases in case it gets lost (put your cell phone # and hotel phone #'s on it)
  • AirTags or Bluetooth Trackers: Adding an AirTag or SmartTag inside the suitcase allows for independent tracking if the airline temporarily misplaces a bag.
  • check expiration dates on credit cards, atm cards, passports, driver lic, etc (France requires your passport to be valid for a minimum of 3 months beyond your intended return date)
  • inform your bank of your travel dates and adjust your atm daily withdrawal rate
  • inform your credit card companies of your travel dates and destinations
  • double check your credit limit on credit cards you intend to use...
  • bring "international" contact phone numbers for credit and debit cards along with you
  • take phone pics of any credit or debit card u r bringing along
  • International Drivers License  (rental car company will not give you a car without lic)
  • medical insurance cards
  • bring along your travel docs, flight receipts, frequent flyer #'s, etc
  • bring copy of your travel insurance policy and contact #'s
  • plan on bringing a little US emergency cash
  • consider using a money belt or neck wallet
  • consider purchasing international cell phone plans
  • Portable Power Bank:  a slim external battery pack (power bank) in a daypack is a lifesaver when a phone is being used all day for photos, navigation, and translating.
  • consider a road map (we suggest Michelins)We suggest Michelin Provence Map #527 available here : Amazon
  • bring any guidebooks you want (freq traveller hack: just rip out pages needed and staple)
  • don't forget to bring any prescription medications you may need/in original bottle
  • Prescription Cross-Check: For prescription medications, it's sometimes helpful to note down the generic chemical name of the drug, not just the US brand name, just in case an emergency refill is ever needed at a European pharmacy.
  • other pharma: sleep aid, ibuprofen, band-aids, vitamins, anti-diarrehal, Metamucil kleenex, Qtips, sunscreen, extra contact lens, extra glasses, sunglasses, hat, etc
  • ear plugs / sleeping mask / travel blanket / tiny flashlight
  • hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes for the airplane
  • Compression Socks: For the long-haul flight, these are a game-changer for circulation and keeping legs feeling fresh upon landing
  • phrase book or translator app
  • travel umbrella and/or rain jacket/hat (yes, it rains in France too)
  • your new Adventures To Provence water thermos
  • luggage locks (needs to be TSA approved)
  • tide pen/wine stain remover
  • wall and & car chargers for cell phone
  • camera/charger/travel binocs
  • European electric plug adapters (you probably want two)
  • safety pins / ziplock bags / sew kit
  • swimming suit
  • corkscrew (must be in checked luggage)
  • shoes you can truly walk in
  • notepad, journal, pen (great journaling apps in the app store)
  • nailclipper / tweezer / hairbrush / razor
  • lay out all your clothes you want to bring...
  • only bring half of them...  traveler's rule of thumb is two tops to every one bottom
  • your rental car voucher (they won't give you the car without voucher)
  • set up "out of office auto-email response"
  • have a list of spouses/friends cell #'s, email addresses, hotel, villa addresses, phone #'s, flight #'s, etc... (know where you are, where ur going, and how to get back)
  • leave expensive jewelry / watches / purses at home (they only mark you as a target)
  • consider bringing empty tote bag  (to meet carry on restrictions)
  • ziplock bags for carryon liquids / wet swim suits
  • GPS (if you're planning on bringing your own, check that it has euro-maps) many folks now use cell phone map apps
  • Download Offline Maps: download the Google Maps or Apple Maps area for your destinations before leaving home. If you hit a dead zone in the countryside, GPS still works perfectly on downloaded offline maps.
  • PDFs on the Phone: saving PDFs of the rental car voucher, travel insurance, and lodging confirmations directly to a phone's "Files" app ensures they can be accessed even with zero cell service.
  • The "Chip and PIN" Reminder: For European toll booths, gas pumps, and ticket kiosks, cards often require a 4-digit PIN. It's worth knowing your credit card PINs (not just debit), as automated machines sometimes reject "signature-only" cards
  • Download "WhatsApp" from the App Store - (this is how we'll all stay in touch in Provence)
  • Bring some "White" clothes for our Soirée Blanche!
again guys, we've tried hard, but it's very likely we may have missed things... and of course, you don't need everything on this list...  Just bring what YOU need! it's getting fun now! It's gonna be a magical adventure!

PS: it's never too late to learn a few words of French!  Many of our guests ask us: "Do they speak English?"   The answer to that is: no, they speak French!   So,  there are French people who can speak English... And certainly in the more forward facing hospitality & retail businesses you'll find more folks who speak some English... But for the most part, the people  in France, speak French...   Click on the Duolingo logo in the right sidebar... It's free, it's effective, and we guarantee you will have a better experience if you learn 100 words of French!

As always, we're here to answer any questions that you may have, or to help you in any way that we can...Just reach out! Don't get anxious about your travels, you're going to have a truly great experience!

(ps: We're using a new "shipping platform" & we've shipped you a box with your Tour Vouchers, luggage tags, etc...  Do us a favor, when you receive it, just drop us a quick email with the subject line "Got it".  (Thanks)

You'll hear more of these guys... "Music Travel Love". They're one of our very
favorite bands, and they've traveled with us all over the world...

Sustainable Sips: Our Gift to You (and the Planet!)

there's a huge difference between
these & a standard water bottle
Over the last decade, Europe has made a massive push to eliminate single-use plastics. While we fully support the mission, it has made that "quick bottle of water" at the corner store both harder to find and much more expensive.

At Adventures to Tuscany, we took a hard look at our own footprint. In the past, we typically provisioned three bottles of water per guest, per day. That added up to nearly 350 plastic bottles per tour ~ or several thousand bottles every tour season. Knowing that many of those never actually make it to a recycling plant, we knew it was time for a change.

Meet Your New Favorite Travel Companion

To do our part for the environment (and to keep you perfectly hydrated!), every guest will receive a special gift: our official Adventures to Provence insulated thermos. We didn’t just pick any bottle; we chose the one Terese and I use every single day. Here’s why you’re going to love it:

  • Pro-Grade Quality: Made of lightweight, powder-coated 18/8 stainless steel.

  • Serious Insulation: Double-walled and vacuum-sealed to keep drinks ice-cold or steaming hot for nearly 24 hours.

  • The Perfect Size: Holds 0.5 liters (17 oz)—ideal for the side pocket of your daypack.

  • Versatile: Fill it with the ultra-pure, delicious water from our Villa in the Luberon Mountains, or use it toyake along a little extra morning espresso!

A Little Taste of Luxury on the Go

Our late June Tours are beautiful, but those Provençal afternoons can get quite warm...  We might go as far as to say HOT!  There is nothing like reaching for your pack and finding a sip of ice-cold water waiting for you. Terese and I often carry two: one filled with ice water and one with hot espresso to share throughout the day.

They are also perfect for your bedside table at the Villa, ensuring you have a cold drink within reach all night long.

Ready for Departure

We’ll be mailing these out along with your Travel Vouchers, Luggage Tags, etc as we get closer to your departure date. (we'll let you know when we send them; usually about 30 days before your departure)We strongly encourage you to pack them! Whether we are exploring hidden villages or walking through historic cities, you’ll be glad you have it. If you’ve traveled with us before and already have one ~ now you’ve got a matching set!

"We first discovered these years ago when we needed something functional for ourselves while leading our tours. We fell in love with them, and we know you will, too. Many of our past guests tell us they still use theirs every single day back home!"

Thank you for choosing us for your Adventure to Provence... We truly appreciate your support and can’t wait to share a glass (or a thermos) of wine with you soon!

(if your mailing address has changed since you registered for the Tour, please let us know asap before we mail these boxes out)

Day 7: L'art de Bien Vivre ~ A Celebration of the Good Life at Château Pesquie

The Art of Living Well – A Celebration of The Good Life at Château Pesquie Wine Estate

There is a very specific rhythm to life in Provence ~ a cadence that prioritizes the senses, the sunshine, and the soil... After a whirlwind week of exploring hilltop villages, navigating bustling local markets, and wandering through the historic Roman ruins of Provence, we’ve certainly earned a moment of pause. It has been an incredibly active journey so far, filled with discovery and movement. That is why Day 7 is designed with a completely different energy. Today, we trade our walking shoes for a leisurely seat in the shade; we are slowing the tempo entirely to embrace the "Art de Vivre" (the art of living). On Day 7 of our journey, we fully immerse ourselves in this "Art de Vivre" as we head into the foothills of Mont Ventoux to visit the legendary Château Pesquie (pronounced Pez-key-ā).  This estate, tucked at the foot of Mount Ventoux, is the perfect sanctuary for a day of rest.

This isn't just a stop on a map; it is an invitation to experience the soul of the Ventoux AOC. Owned by the Chaudière family for generations, this boutique estate is a pioneer in sustainable viticulture, producing wines that capture the perfect tension between the warmth of the Mediterranean sun and the cool, limestone-driven freshness of the mountains of the Ventoux.

As we settle into the beauty of this estate, we urge you to take a moment to acknowledge how truly special this is... In our busy lives, it's sometimes easy to forget that not everyone gets the opportunity to travel internationally and immerse themselves in these types of world-class experiences... Today is all about that acknowledgment... Not rushing around sight-seeing as so many tourists might do in a foreign country, but taking the time to relax... spending a day as a local might truly do... enjoying the sights & sounds of a boutique wine estate in the foothills  of the Alps...  Take a deep breath and look around. You’ve worked hard for this, and you deserve to savor it... Be happy, be present, and realize how fortunate we all are to be living this incredible lifestyle together, even if just for a while...

A Morning Among the Vines

Our day begins with an intimate Tour of the Estate. As we enter this grand Estate, we'll take their private road which winds through the majestic Plane Trees. The Estate is surrounded by over 250 acres of organic, biodynamic vineyards where the Mistral wind whistles through the Grenache and Syrah grapes, where this unique terroir creates incredibly elegant, mineral-rich wines. Our Tour of the Estate starts with Celine who will take us through the hospitality center and explain the Ventoux AOC and what makes this terroir & this estate so amazing. We'll move from the hospitality center down into the production area & cellars for a more detailed look at how Pesquie produces these special biodynamic wines... Following the tour, we'll  move back to the hospitality center and belly up to the bar for a curated, Guided Tasting. From their crisp, floral whites & pale rosés to their deep, velvety reds, you’ll taste exactly why Château Pesquie has earned international acclaim while remaining fiercely dedicated to its biodynamic farming & local roots.

Le Chic Pique-Nique Champêtre Français

After awakening our palates, we’ll transition to the highlight of the afternoon: Our Grand French Country Picnic. Leaving The Hospitality Center, we've arranged for classic wicker picnic hampers filled with Provençal specialities, a classic French checkered tablecloth and we'll hike over to our Private Grove.

We have secured a beautiful private grove right beside the Château. Here, in the dappled sunlight provided by 300-year-old Plane Trees, we will spread out for a feast that feels like a scene from a classic French film... This is no ordinary lunch; it’s a very casual, curated spread of local charcuterie, artisanal cheeses, crusty baguettes, and seasonal Provençal specialties, accompanied of course by bottles & bottles of Chateau Pesquie's best wines!

To make this afternoon truly magical & unforgettable, we have arranged to be serenaded throughout the afternoon with a private concert by a traditional French Troubadour. You’ve likely heard a steady rhythmic hum throughout our travels this week,.. and today, you’ll meet these "backup singers" ~ the famous Provençal Cigales. The cigales are practically the heartbeat of a Provençal summer!  These cicadas are known as the soul of the region, and these tiny musicians provide a natural choir that perfectly complements our singer’s guitar. And there is nothing quite like the sound of live melodies mixing with the song of the cicadas as it floats through the ancient trees.  It is the ultimate soundtrack for a "chill" afternoon, as we sip chilled wine, nibble on charcuterie and let the afternoon drift by...

Sunset & Celebrations: The "Summer in Provence" Party

Once we’ve had our fill of the estate's hospitality, we’ll make our way back to the Villa to freshen up. But the festivities are far from over... There will of course be another party at the pool!

And as the golden hour hits, we’ll gather for Happy Hour, Appetizers and another festive Dinner Party, leading directly into our signature Summer in Provence Party. This last night together is dedicated to friendship, fine wine, and the joy of being exactly where we are!  We’ll toast to the week’s adventures, share stories under the stars, and celebrate this incredible Mediterranean lifestyle that has a way of staying in your heart long after you leave.

Get ready for a day of elegance, heritage, and pure Provençal joy!

Speaking of French Troubadours... This ones singing a story about living your very best life... doing all the things so many say they want to do, but not getting around to it... If this experience has been on your bucket list for a while, feel good that you're living your best life and doing all the things you truly want to do!
